DAY OF SURGERY FAQs
The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research in Atlanta, GA provides answers to some of the more frequently asked questions about what to expect the day of surgery below. Contact us today for more information.
No. The grafts are dissected under microscopes and the length of the hair is removed from the final graft. On the day of the procedure you will leave with several hundred, even thousands, of implanted follicles, which will take from two to four months to begin growing.
Here at the Griffin Center, we believe that keeping the patient as comfortable as possible is an essential part of the procedure. Dr. Griffin uses a combination of oral and intramuscular medications for sedation during the entire procedure. The local anesthetic numbs the scalp so the patient experiences no discomfort. After the anesthesia is administered, the patient frequently falls asleep or listens to music while the procedure is completed. Our patients are pleasantly surprised that the procedure is much more comfortable than expected. Post-operative pain medicine will be prescribed for at-home use. However, mild pain medication is usually sufficient following the initial day of surgery.
Depending on the size of the session, the procedure takes 4 to 5 hours for the smallest case and up to 8 to 10 hours for the largest case.
The morning of the procedure, before you receive any sedation, you and Dr. Griffin will review the plan for surgery discussed at your initial consultation. Then, the sedation and local anesthesia will be administered while you rest comfortably and listen to music. Throughout the day you will be able to have juice and snacks and use the restroom if necessary, in our private suite. Your comfort is our main concern.
