Red Light Therapy for Hair Loss

Hair loss can be discouraging for people which makes them look and feel older than they actually are. However, with improved hair restoration technology and scientific advancements, hair loss may be delayed and restored to a natural and normal appearance.  Many patients at the Griffin Center for Hair Restoration and Research first seek non-surgical options for hair loss.  Traditional, non-surgical hair loss treatments that have proven effective include topical and oral medications, finasteride (Propecia®) and minoxidil (Rogaine®).

Red Light Therapy for Hair LossWith over 30 years of hair restoration experience, Dr. Edmond Griffin is continually seeking new and effective options for hair loss patients. Red light therapy is a non-surgical option for hair restoration that has come into its own.   You may have read in our previous blog about the Laser Cap which uses low level laser therapy (red light therapy) to help stimulate hair growth, through a portable cap that can be worn under any hat. This cap contains 224 LED lights emitting the red wavelength which stimulates growth of the hair follicles. This is the most convenient and can be used during exercise or while working or relaxing. The battery pack frees the patient to roam without cords.

At the Griffin Center we have 2 in-office red light machines which offer multiple uses. Besides accelerating hair growth, red light therapy can also be used to speed recovery and healing time after hair transplant surgery. According to the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, low level light on damaged tissue can induce a complex chain of physiological reactions to enhance wound healing and tissue regeneration, as well as reduce acute inflammation.  As for hair thinning, direct light to the scalp works by waking cells within the hair follicle from dormancy into an active growth phase.  Red light therapy can also be used to improve the take-rate or survival rate of transplanted grafts after hair restoration surgery.

Other known uses for red light therapy include acne scarring therapy and treatment of pre-cancerous lesions on the scalp.  If you are interested in learning more about red light therapy and how it may be beneficial for you, please contact our office today to set-up a consultation.
