In the forty years that we’ve been in practice, literally thousands of men and women have come to the Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research with questions about non-surgical hair restoration and hair transplantation surgery. Even though each one of their individual cases is unique, we have found that nearly all patients are concerned about scars. Some may have seen pictures of hair transplantation procedures that went poorly, with long, linear scars that are clearly visible. Others might be aware of personal health issues which may make them particularly susceptible to scarring. Regardless of the specific concerns, the providers at the Griffin Center use a number of techniques to minimize hair transplant scarring and ensure that your hair transplantation results are as natural looking as possible.
Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a completely “scar-less” hair transplant, no matter whether you use a strip procedure or a follicular unit extraction approach. Any time an incision is made in the skin some form of scar will always be left behind. However, depending on who performs your procedure, most scars will gradually fade over time. A follicular unit transplant (or FUT procedure, also known as a follicular unit graft or strip procedure) requires a small section of scalp to be removed from the back or side of the scalp while a follicular unit extraction (or FUE) approach works by removing follicular units individually, but in either case small cuts in the scalp do need to be made. However, as board certified dermatologist Dr. Ashley Curtis explains in this video, these scars are much smaller and fainter than most people might think, especially if the incisions are made by a highly skilled and experienced surgeon. Moreover, there are customized instruments and specialized closure techniques that we use at The Griffin Center that can make these scars even less noticeable.
At The Griffin Center, minimizing surgical scars is just one of the many things that we do to help provide our patients with the best hair transplant experience possible, because we believe that it is the details that make the difference. However, it is also important to understand that hair transplantation surgery may not be the right treatment for everyone, which is why we also provide customized treatment plans which may include anything from specially formulated vitamins and prescription compounds to more advanced preventative measures like platelet rich plasma and red light laser therapy.
