For over 35 years, board-certified dermatologist Dr. Edmond Griffin has specialized in hair restoration for men and women. Dr. Griffin continually seeks out new and interesting hair loss and restoration research to provide his patients with the most advanced and effective options available.
The Griffin Center of Hair Restoration and Research has recommended Propecia® (finasteride) for male pattern baldness patients for over 10 years for hair loss prevention. Through consistent and proper medication usage, finasteride can be a very effective non-surgical hair loss prevention option.
In previous blogs, Dr. Griffin has discussed side effects of finasteride including sexual side effects, however, a new study suggests that finasteride may also reduce alcohol intake and suppress alcohol preference. The study will be published in the November 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research. The study examined 83 men who reported sexual side effects from the use of finasteride, despite stopping the medication for at least three months. During interviews the participants were asked various questions including alcohol-consumption habits before and after the use of finasteride.
The results showed that of 63 the men who drank at least one drink per week before using finasteride, 65% of them noticed a decrease in their drinking after the medication. Althoughthis scientific research is interesting, it’s important to note that further research needs to be conducted before concluding that finasteride can be used for reduction of alcohol consumption.
